The new ‘Data Transfer Utility’ a.k.a transfer table in Sybase ASE 15.5 version

By now you’ve probably heard about the recently release version 15.5 of ASE. The main feature of ASE 15.5 is its In-Memory Database feature, for delivering ‘Extreme Performance’ (more information is here).
However, there is another interesting feature in ASE 15.5 which is worth mentioning: the so-called ‘Incremental Data Transfer Utility’. This feature offers a new way of extracting data from an ASE table, which is much faster than can be achieved by classic methods, like BCP-out. Moreover, it’s not just faster than BCP, but also it offers more functionality.

Over thecourse of the past 10 years, in-memory database technology has emergedas a key means of boosting performance and scalability and containingstorage costs. The new Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 15.5, which shipped in December 2009, is the first product from Sybase to be shipped with an in-memory database (IMDB), an emerging alternative to disk-based databases which has already been adopted by competitors Oracle and IBM.

IBM already offers IMDB through its solidDB product, and Oracle through its Oracle Times Ten In-Memory Database.

But IBM and Oracle both obtained their IMDBs via acquisition, noted Raj Rathee, Sybase's product manager for ASE, speaking to reporters and database administrators at the company's ASE 15.5 launch event this week in New York City.

Consequently, Sybase's new IMDB is the first in the industry to be fully integrated, supplying the same look-and-feel, administration, and monitoring as the company's disk-based enterprise DB. Sybase's IMDB also uses the same T-SQL language, and supports the same APIs as the disk-based option, according to Rathee.

Sybase ASE 15.5 New Features

INTRODUCTION

Sybase introduced Adaptive Server® Enterprise 15 (ASE 15) in September 2005. Since then ASE 15.0.1, ASE 15.0.2 and ASE 15.0.3 have added significant new features and capabilities to the ASE 15x product line. Most notably, ASE 15.0.2 introduced features sought after by application developers as well as database administrators. These include features such as user-defined SQL functions instead of triggers, row locked system catalogs, xmltable, several security and encryption enhancements, new statistical aggregate functions and numerous other performance, monitoring and diagnostics features.

Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise has proven itself for over 20 years as a highly dependable database powering mission-critical, high-performance systems in the most demanding areas of business. In version 15.5, Sybase ASE provides additional performance improvements by optionally optimizing certain aspects of database transaction handling (also known as “ACID properties”).

Many business applications contain areas where data needs to be stored only temporarily, yet ASE handles such data with the same transactional guarantees as critical data that must be stored 100% safely.
