I would please like to know the procedure to add a database to replication setup.

current setup

ASE_P (P_DB) --> REP_SERVER --> ASE_R (R_DB)

I need to add one more R_DB which should take data from same P_DB is it possible and what steps involve please.

there is only one replication def and replication sub I see with rs_helpdbrep and rs_helpdbsub.

Just creating subscription would be fine?

please advise...

Does anyone has a script that checks if any database on a particular sybase server is offline and sends an email alert ( listing the database/s if any database/s is offline)?

On unix platform, To change the dsync to true from false,
use the command

sp_deviceattr

sp_deviceattr logicalname, optname, optvalue

E.g

1> sp_deviceattr test_dev01,dsync,true

#After using sp_deviceattr to change the dsync setting, you must reboot Adaptive Server before the change takes affect.
#dsync is always on for the master device file. You cannot change the dsync setting for a master device file with sp_deviceattr.

disk mirror

Description: Creates a software mirror that immediately takes over when the primary device fails.

Syntax

disk mirror

disk unmirror

Description :Suspends disk mirroring initiated with the disk mirror command to allow hardware maintenance or the changing of a hardware device.

How to increase the size of sybase database device dynamically

Use Command : disk resize

The disk resize command allows you to increase the size of your database devices dynamically, rather than initializing a new device. For example, if /sybase/testdev.dat requires an additional 10MB of space, you can run disk resize and allocate this amount of space to the device. The create and alter database commands can use this added space.

You can use disk resize to increase the size for both devices on raw partitions and for file systems. The minimum amount of space by which you can increase a device is 1MB or an allocation unit, whichever is greater.

disk resize syntax

disk resize has the following syntax:

disk resize
name = “device_name”,
size = additional_space

Where device_name is the name of the device you are increasing and additional_space is the additional disk space you are adding to this device.

The dump database command makes a copy of the entire
database, including both the data and the transaction log.
dump database does not truncate the log.
dump database allows dynamic dumps. Users can continue to
make changes to the database while the dump takes place.
This makes it convenient to back up databases on a regular
basis.
dump database executes in three phases. A progress message
informs you when each phase completes. When the dump is
finished, it reflects all changes that were made during its
execution, except for those initiated during phase 3.

Answer : We do not have shrink db in 15.0 release. It will be available post 15.0

BOSTON: A computer security expert has uncovered what he says are flaws in widely used software from Oracle Corp that could let hackers remotely access sensitive information in corporate and government databases.

A bug in the design of the Oracle database -- the world's top-selling software for storing electronic information -- could allow hackers to break into private databases via the Internet, said David Litchfield, chief research scientist of NGSSoftware Ltd, a UK-based computer security company.

It allows an attacker without a user ID and password to take complete control. All firewalls become irrelevant, Litchfield said on Wednesday after presenting his research at the Black Hat hacking conference in Washington.

Litchfield said that he warned Oracle of the problem in November, hoping that the company would fix the flaw when it issued a group of quarterly security patches in January.

He said that he decided to go public because Oracle failed to do so.

Sybase Error - Database dump failed with no space left on device error

The 'shmget' call failed for database/archive device while working on stripe device /backup/sybdumps/Server1.xxx' with error number 28 (No space left on device). Refer to our operating system documentation for further details.

The above specified error occurred while backing up Sybase databases i.e. when database dump is being performed.

Do you know the maximum size of a sybase database ?

A Sybase database can contain up to 2,147,483,648 logical pages, so its maximum size depends on its logical page size:

• The maximum database size on a 2K page server is 4TB.
• The maximum database size on a 4K page server is 8TB.
• The maximum database size on an 8K page server is 16TB.
• The maximum database size on a 16K page server is 32TB.
