Hi All,

I faced the following error and when I tried to increase the number of open indexes config option, I couldn't do as the server was not allowing me to do it with some error message(I missed to make a note of the error message :( ). But after some 15 minutes or so the server was alright and I was able to increase the value of the parameter.


Error: 8424, Severity: 17, State: 1
server Cannot find an available index descriptor for an index
Increase the value of 'number of open indexes'. If sp_configure fails due to lack of index descriptors, edit the configuration file and restart the server.

My Questions are:

1. Is there a way to increase to the value of the number of open indexes parameter before the server becomes alright?

2. Is rebooting the server the only option here?

3. I believe the reson why the server didn't allow me to do anything is , what ever I ran (sp_configure, sp_monitorconfig) was trying to use a index and server couldn't access the index...

You can use the below command to find out the sybase open client version currently being used.

From the unix command prompt

> $SYBASE/$SYBASE_OCS/bin/isql -v

Please check if the unix variables SYBASE and SYBASE_OCS are set correctly before you execute the above unix command.
